This travel session in Helena, MT was so much fun! I get asked often how I find locations for travel sessions so here are some of my tips!
Google Maps
I always start with Google maps! Look for the “green” areas. For this location I was looking for parks with tall grass and open space. Parks can be hit or miss because sometimes they get mowed and I do not like short, mowed grass! I needed to stop by and use the app “Sunseeker” to see where the sun was going to set before committing. Luckily, it was perfect!
After I find a location worth looking into I then look up the spot on Instagram. There is often tagged photos which can be very helpful. Make sure to check out the “places” tab. I’m looking for things like lighting, how busy it is, if there are any flowers blooming at certain times of year etc.
Networking
One of the best tips I have is to build a network of photographers on social media. I have reached out to photographers before for help with locations in other cities with great success. I always make sure to mention that I will return the favor if there are ever in Idaho or Washington. This is done best if you are making meaningful connections already by commenting and supporting others on social media.
