Carytown Family Session in Richmond, Virginia

I have so much to say about this session in Carytown, Virginia! This family has been with me for 7 years! They were one of the first “adventure” sessions I did at the beginning and we haven’t stopped since! Britta is also a photographer and does the BEST job styling her family. We started by picking a location and then she showed me her ideas for outfits. I knew the orange and green would photograph so well together especially with the locations we picked! We loved the white backdrop for the color, and then murals as well! Carytown in Richmond Virginia was the most fun spot for photos!

I flew in the day before and did location scouting that morning. We had done some scouting on google first and then narrowed down our choices (I was working with a videographer friend as well!). We got lucky with these two spots! The way I start on Google is by searching the general area and clicking on any “green” spots on the map and look through any photos that have shared at that location. I’m looking either for tall grass and trees or interesting architectural elements. If I’m shooting at an urban location I have to keep in mind that it may be too crowded to work well. This spot below was pretty crowded but we were able to find side streets that were less so. I also try to use the family to block out anything in the background.

Styling masterclass below! Britta picked two complimentary colors with neutrals. She always accessorizes perfectly and mixes great texture and details. Each of the outfits has some point of interest to it. There is rarely just a t shirt and jeans. Even their shoes are intentional! This session was a little last minute and she shopped for most of it on Amazon!
