When clients don’t want their kids faces on social media

One of my most loyal families are also influencers and choose not to share their kids faces on social media. At first I was worried because they were choosing my favorite locations and it was going to make me sad not to share them. But ultimately I completely respect the decision. This family is a little unique in that they also request photos with their kids that don’t share their face since they have an online presence.

Why do people choose not to share their kids faces online?

I see this topic discussed often but it’s worth mentioning. Online use of photos is a murky concept. Anyone can take any photo and do what they want with it. It is within reason to want to protect our kids when it comes to online photos of them. Of course you have probably heard of celebrities reasons that it wasn’t their kids decision to be famous.

I have been aware as my kids are getting older is what it will be like for them to grow up and have so much of their life online. I try my best not to post anything without their consent and keep their feelings in mind when I share our experiences. It’s so tricky because social media has been an amazing place to connect with other parents and not feel so alone in parenting. There really isn’t a set “do this and not that” balance.

Why do photographers have an issue not sharing their work on social media?

The debate comes from photographers that end up with a majority of their clients opting to not have any of their photos shared online. It can be tricky to market your business without anything to share. If this becomes the case then I recommend raising prices and holding regular portfolio building sessions for content to share.

Remember why we do this

Ultimately, we are photographers because we love giving people beautiful photos of their families. It can be distracting when social media is such a big part of marketing our business.
