How Do I Know When (and What) To Charge As A New Family Photographer?

Q: I’m a new family photographer, how do I know when (and what) to start charging as a new family photographer?

A: When you can be consistent. I believe that you should not start charging money until you are confident that you can provide the promised service.

If you’re still not sure what’s going to happen when you show up to shoot, you need more practice! Which is totally normal! If you need help with portfolio building I have a class for you!

*Side note to the perfectionists out there. You are likely way more proficient than you are giving yourself credit for. You do not need to be providing a “perfect” session every time. If you need some encouragement in this area, comment “perfectionist” below, or come find me on Instagram!

Here’s a checklist to use: Can you provide photos of everyone looking not unhappy? Do you know how to find even lighting? If a child is going to be difficult, do you know how to pivot? Do you have a toolbox of poses and prompts to use? If you struggle with these things I would love to help guide you! I have monthly options for mentoring to help get you on track!

When you are feeling confident of what you can provide, start with a “portfolio building” fee of $50+. Only include a set number of photos for this price (10 or so) and offer the full gallery at an up-charge. When you are consistently up-selling most of your galleries, increase the price. This is a great way to ensure that you are providing actual value to your clients. I started by raising prices $100 every few months when I was actively learning and building. I believe all photographers should aim for $500 sessions at least if they want to be profitable.
