When Is the Best Time of Year for Family Photos in Boise
One of the most common questions I hear as a Boise family photographer is, “When should we book our family photos?”
The truth is — there’s no single “perfect” season. The best time depends on your family, your kids, and the feeling you want your photos to have. I certainly have preferences (wildflower season anyone?) but the best answer will depend greatly on your family and what you’re looking for.
Spring Family Photos in Boise (March–May)

I have to say this may be my favorite season to photograph families in Boise. The wildflowers alone are worth booking early in the year. There are a few more benefits to a spring session though. If you book in April the sunsets are still early ish (great option if you have young kids and are worried about later bedtimes at sunset). Boise can get super hot in the summer as well, so a spring session takes advantage of cooler weather. Another perk to spring is the green foothills. We tend to get brown backdrops in the summer when things start to dry out.
Summer Family Photos in Boise (June–August)

There’s just something about summer family photos. The weather is warm, kids are out of school and a little more relaxed. You may want to take advantage of summer activities like playing in the river or have me meet you in McCall or Stanley on an annual trip. Sunsets can be late but don’t worry, I have tips for helping little ones deal with it. Our options for locations in the summer are endless. Golden light just has a different feel in the summer.
Fall Family Photos in Boise (September–November)

There is good reason for the hype around fall family photos. If you’re a sucker for fall colors and fashion I completely understand why you’d want to wait. We have decent color in the trees around here and I love to help coordinate outfits for the perfect Christmas card photo. The temperatures and sunset times start to drop as well. Keep in mind fall schedules and a greater chance of rain but otherwise it’s hard to beat!
Winter Family Photos in Boise (December–February)

Don’t count out winter for family photos! Snow photos are so fun and can be planned around your family trips to Tamarack or Brundage. Winter is also a great time to get photos taken at home or in a studio. The big perk to winter photos is most of our schedules are a little less packed so it may be easier to get a date on the schedule.
How Far in Advance Should You Book Family Photos in Boise?
I recommend around 8 weeks at least so we have time to plan outfits and you’re able to block out time in your schedule. Fall photos tend to book up the quickest though so grab a date early if that’s your plan. Never hesitate to reach out if you have something available last minute and want to squeeze something in.
*Quick note: I try not to schedule weekend sessions in the summer so I can enjoy time with my kiddos before they get too big and busy for me. If you’re needing a weekend session for sure I have a surcharge or spring and fall weekends are available.
